I am thinking about building enclosure for my air compressor according to your plans (3 boxes).
Now I have a heap of small scrap rock peeces (granite, marble and the like). They are 8-15mm thick 50-100mm long, and 10-30mm wide.
I was thinking, if mass is a good thing for stopping sound, would it make sense to epoxy those small peaces to the mdf in some random manner?
if so, on the inside, outside, or both? Does it make sense to put acoustic foam over it?
Or this is yet another example how people who do not know acoustics have rather bad ideas?
