Laminated glass facing outside or interior
« on: May 09, 2015, 04:40:34 AM »

Hello All Experts,

For sound reduction in a IGU, Laminated glass facing outside better or facing inside better?  configuration see below, which one will be more effective.  Thanks!

outside  /Lami/ 1/2" air /single pane  inside
outside  single pane/ 1/2" air /Lami/  inside

I highly doubt you would see a difference in this format.
I would say the mass of the lami at source would be best but since your air gap is only 1/2" I doubt it would be huge reductions.
You need to get the air gap larger 2" minimum.

Thanks Randy, that's what I thought, not much difference.  I wish I can get the 2" air gap, but there is no such thing in a standard residential vinyl window and I don't want to build a window in front of another window.

I would go over to www.milgard.com and purchase one of their quiet line vinyl windows that shows the highest STC/OITC rating.
There factory windows have the greatest air gaps.

is quiet line much better than Tuscany if I use dissimilar glass or lami assembly on Tuscany.

Thanks,

I would contact Milgard direct and ask them for the comparison of the quiet line to the Tuscany line.
