Lead sheeting VS. Mass Loaded Vinyl ?
« on: June 07, 2015, 10:33:16 PM »
I am considering building a large box, and wish to make it as sound proof as possible - I wish to keep external noise from getting inside the box.   The noise is primarily low frequency noise, so low in frequency that it is felt more then heard.   I understand this frequency spectrum is much harder to deal with.

My general idea is to build a small frame with 2X4's perhaps, and try to isolate it from surround  walls and floors with thick styro foam.  Then I'd use multiple  layers of 1/8 or 1/4 inch MDF and either lead sheeting or mass loaded vinyl - or both perhaps if it would make any sense.

My understanding is that the ability of the lead sheet or MLV to block sound is based upon the materials mass.   So, my question is which is better ?

If a 1/16 inch thick (I think that was it) sheet of lead weighs 1 lb per square foot, and a ~1/8 inch thick sheet of MLV weighs the same 1 lb per square foot ... wouldn't that suggest that the denser material - and thus the better one to use, would be the lead sheeting ?

Mass loaded vinyl is the replacement product for lead sheet, lead is the best...just more cost.
Since you are dealing with low frequency, I would advise you build a double box (complex structure).
if it was a 6" concrete box you would still be able to send impact noise into the box and this is what you get when you have low frequency and high SPL.

This box will be very heavy.

Randy, thank you for your reply.   Can you briefly describe what you mean by a double box - and how that is different/better then a box with multiple layers ?

I assume that perhaps you mean a inner box somehow mechanically isolated from the external box.  That may be a little difficult as the real purpuse of the box is for me to sleep in it.

The box would be inside a house, and the low frequency noise is coming from outside the house.

I assume the weight would be somewhat less then a full size water bed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok now that I have a better idea of what you are doing, go ahead and build it like an isolation booth and since it will be in a bedroom this will act as the complex structure.
Use the 2lb mass loaded vinyl and also place the unit on vibration pads and this should work fine.

Feel free to contact me direct.
