block sound and vibration coming from wall
« on: August 10, 2015, 04:13:35 PM »
Hello!
I live in a really nice apartment on the ground floor which unfortunately has and annoying issue related to sound in our bedroom.
On the other side of our bedroom wall there are the two bathrooms of our neighbor and their fans make a strong and annoying sound which prevent me from sleeping.
They are generally very good in respecting quiet hours (which is great) but sometimes they take a shower really early in the morning and they turn the fan on which forces me to wake up.
In addition to this, the bathroom of the apartment on the second floor is exactly on top of the first floor bathroom and the fan is a similar problem. It makes a "deepr" sound and it also adds some vibration.
Unfortunately the people on the second floor are not as nice as the people of the first floor making my sleep more problematic.
What can I do to mainly block the sound coming from the wall (and a little bit from the ceiling on the corner of the room)? The vibration is not a big issue compared to the sound so I'm more concerned about blocking the sound!
I do really like the apartment and I would like to not be forced to move so any advice or things to try would be great.
Thank you!

the vibration is sound and your sheet rock is the speaker...

In order for you to reduce this problem you must decouple from the structure.
Either decouple the fan, buy quieter fans (1 sone)  or remove your the sheet rock and use clips and channel to re hand the sheet rock 2 layers of 5/8"

Just adding layers of mass will give you some reduction but the screws that hold the sheet rock are the tuning forks back to the structure. So " Mass Law" might not yield a good enough reduction.

Thank you for your reply!
Unfortunately I can't act on the fans since they are in my neighbors apartment and it something that the community manager should do.
The only thing I "can" do is add or do something on my side of the wall.
Is there anything I could put on top of the wall to reduce the amount of noise that would pass through?

yes you can add another layer of sheet rock and use green glue dampening compound.
3 tubes per 4' x 8' sheet no less!
This is the best " Band-Aid" you can do at this point if you can not decouple from the structure.
