Duct damping material
« on: February 14, 2016, 08:05:05 PM »
I'm planning to build a completely isolated room within a space in my townhouse basement.  The room is intended for band practice, and the idea is minimize noise escaping the room and entering the rest of the house, and more importantly the neighboring units. There are some large main branch ducts that will be a few inches from the wall of the new room.  They aren't touching anywhere, but I'm sure there will still be vibrations that get passed into the ducts.  I'm looking for suggestions on how to prevent sounds from getting into the ducts.

I have looked into a few products including fatmat, peel and seal, dynamat, frost king duct insulation.  The fat mat and peel and seal seem like they would work but might not be good because of the heat.  Dynomat would probably work, but is probably very expensive.  Though I might not have to cover the entire duct.  The frost king insulation seems like it might be a little on the light side, and maybe not ideal for sound damping.

Any thoughts on a reasonable priced, and easily implemented solution?  Thought about how much coverage I would need.  I do not want to put any liner in the duct.

Also, I plan to wind 6" insulated flex duct for the supply and return into this room.  So I'm not too concerned about that aspect.  The main ducts (supply and return) that are running above the new room are each about 8"x20" and run about 20'-0" exposed.

Sorry for the delay on this thread,

We use our SSP foam mat 1/2" or 1" to line the duct and then build a baffle box when running the supply and return into the sound room.

You can cover the duct with Mass loaded vinyl as well.
