New Construction Advice Please and Thank you! :)
« on: September 19, 2016, 12:33:41 PM »
Hello everyone,

I've spent the better part of several days reading and researching how best to soundproof a new room I plan to build and would appreciate any guidance.

The sounds I am looking to reduce or remove are : dogs, roosters, voices (high and low pitched), booming bass from neighbors and noisy motorcycles. Currently I am in a cement room with wood finish inside and seem to suffer most from  noise coming in through the windows. I am woken up easily and want to create a peaceful, very quiet room.

Materials are a challenge for me as I live overseas and would have to import things like Green Glue, sound clips, resilient channel etc. Windows are also a challenge and am working with a supplier who can provide dual pane laminated windows (single layer, no air gap).

Questions:

Is it worth it for the STC value of the walls to exceed those of the closed windows or is that a waste of time and money?

I am having a hard time finding info about using concrete hollow blocks as exterior wall with dual gypsum board / green glue on the inside. All I've seen shows green glue on the source side. How would that work with concrete / hollow blocks (filled with cement). Concrete is preferred here due to monsoon rains and many termites. Can use wood / gypsum on the interior / ceiling.

I have the time and budget to use any / all materials but don't want to waste time or money importing things that wont help (say if the best window I can get is STC38 or so).

In summary, looking for tips on value of soundproof room using cement / concrete as outer wall considering that high STC windows just may not be available.

Thank you so much for reading and thank you more for any tips or help!

Sincerely,

Chronos

Chronos,

Treat the windows first, this will decide if you can justify doing additional soundproofing on the wall.
If you can get a second pane of glass or plexi glass you can mimic what is done in recording studios.
Mass, gap ,mass

The heavier the pane, the greatest air gap between the panes followed by equal or greater pane is how you will increase the overall STC rating.

Start there because concrete filled cinder block already has a good STC and you might be able to make an equal bubble.

Also if you increase the soft surface area inside sound will be absorbed faster and give you a better overall result.

see our magnaseal system for an example.

Dear Randy,

Thank you so much. I will follow your suggestion and focus on the windows first.
