DIY Plexiglass windows A+++++!!

I bought a beautiful home and got a great deal due to being close to the interstate.   The interstate is about 750 feet from my back yard. We spent some time at the house to see if it would become a problem for us and it really was not loud in the house.  Well the downstairs is fine but when we moved my 3 year old into her room at the back of the house on the 2nd story it was a lot more noticeable.  We used a sound machine and she has had no trouble sleeping.  My wife and I still wanted to look into reducing the noise somewhat. Quote for 3 "Sound proof windows" was $3,500-5,000 and for new double pane was about $2,000 and no guarantee they would be much better than my wood Marvin double panes.

I ended up purchasing 3  55x56 9mm thick, acoustical rated and non yellowing cast sheet acrylic from a local plastic company for about $475.  I built out a new frame, ran some foam tape around the perimeter, installed the plexi, more foam tape, then trimmed it out.  I designed the frame that if there were a need (fire) to remove it quickly you can slide it out one side enough to open the window.  WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It's like night and day.  I keep walking from the office on the other side that I have not installed yet back to her room.  There is ZERO of the high pitched white hwy noise and dramatically reduced lower noise like the compression brakes or really loud tractor trailer / bikes.  All in all I have just over $500 for all the materials.  Took me about 3 hours to do that window, the others should be much quicker.

Best $500 I have ever spent.   I can post pictures if anyone is interested.

Great job!!!

This is exactly why we use our magnaseal system.. buying the expensive windows for the same result has always bothered me..
If you do not want to build the frames you can use this simple installation kit.
