Shared Attic-- noise from next door
« on: October 01, 2016, 01:16:11 AM »
I have a single-story condo built in the 1950s. I have a shared, unfinished attic with my neighbors. All the homes have a crawl space.

A new family moved in next door and their toddler does a lot of running and crying :(. They have some kind of wood or laminate flooring. When he runs, it echoes through my whole house. There is minimal insulation in the attic and I think our shared walls are plaster.

I rarely hear my neighbor on the other side. He has carpet and had extra insulation blown into the attic above his condo. My shared wall with him seems to be drywall instead of plaster.

I've read the info on this website but didn't see anything specifically about dealing with noise coming through an untreated attic. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Ok if the noise is coming from above and through the attic, simply build a wall between the units in the attic. Double 1/2" cement board and double drywall with insulation. This would also be good for security if you both have access to the attic.

however, the running of the toddler on the laminate flooring most likely still come under the shared wall especially if you have a raised foundation.
