Sound Reduction with Sliding Glass Door Condo
« on: October 13, 2016, 05:57:11 PM »
I live in a family owned condo on the second floor. We have a neighbor below us with a patio. The wall facing along that patio has a window in our babies room and in our master bedroom has a sliding glass patio door.

All the windows and sliding glass doors appear to be original from the 1994 construction and are cheap single pane with aluminum trim. Needless to say any kind of commotion on the patio below and noise comes right in like a hot knife through butter.

With the babies room our cheapest solution I believe would be to add a plastic cover over the window frame as described on this site.

Are there any similar solutions for full sliding glass door to a Juliet patio? I have been trying to think of a way to add a second layer to help reduce sound transmission but it really seems our only recourse would be to install a better patio door.

Are there any good contractors in the San Diego area that could help install patio doors with an emphasis on sound reduction? I believe I have noticed Jeld-wen offers some of their standard vinyl trim patio doors with dual pane dissimilar glass thickness. That sounds like my most reasonable option while avoiding the increased cost of laminate glass.

You are on the right track for the windows, the magnaseal system works well as long as you use 3/8" plexi glass and minimum 2" air space.

For the slider, I would also look at Milgard Tuscany slider and compare STC / OITC and cost.
Installation should be done by the distributor to make sure they correctly seal around the slider during installation, I know milgard does this, just unsure about Jeld-wen.

Yeah Milgard Tuscany series seemed to get up pretty high on the STC/ OITC ratings, especially if you spring for laminate dual pane with the thicker glass. I am not sure I saw them doing dissimilar glass thickness but I would be surprised if they didn't.

I suppose that is the only realistic option for the patio door.

The only other option would be double back to back sliders.
