Soundproofing 2 rooms
« on: April 10, 2017, 09:03:05 PM »
Hey guys,

my house was built without insulation.

I am now opening the walls and putting some in, for sound primary.

I am considering adding the resilient channels & clips to make it even more soundproof.
Those who went that route, was it worth the extra cost?

I am on a budget, and would love to do it right

John5521,

Clip and channel create the complex structure which is the base needed for go quality soundproofing.
Once you have done this step you can always add to the system to improve the results with out having to start over.
So with that being said if you could afford the clip and channel system then you save up dowm the road if need be to get better results.

The true question should be what type of sound are you trying to reduce?
if you are dealing with bass or impact noise then it is a must do.

pipes need to be isolated from the frame work and wrapped with Mass loaded vinyl.

You could simply double the TRUE weight of the wall to see a 5db drop ( 40% human perceived reduction)..

walls normally weigh in at 4.2 to 4.6 lbs sqft. therefore you would need to double that weight.
this is indefinite unless you go into complex structure ie. clips and channel or double wall construction.

Thank you Randy.
Should I just buy an MLV roll from your store, or would it be better to buy the pipe wraps you offer?

buy the MLV , 2 reasons, low profile and better blocker, you will need a roll of vinyl tape also to overlap and seal the seams.
also you need to caulk the wall like a fish tank, any penetrations or outlets have to be addressed.
use acoustical caulking for this part of the project.
this is a critical mistake made by many.

Thank you Randy.

What is the return policy?
I can come and pick up the materials but live a bit far.
It'd be nice if I could buy a little extra and return the extra when the project is done.

If I had to make a few trips it would make it hard to complete the projects.

Thank you

Thank you Randy.

I am getting ready to place my order.

A few walls to insulate, and a ceiling.
I am re-doing the floor above, would it be ok to put the MLV on the subfloor?
Or does it have to be under, on the ceiling? I wasn't planning on redoing the ceiling

Thank you

if you are floating or glue down then yes MLV will improve overall STC of the system, if you are doing this for impact it will have little effect unless in a decoupled assembly.

call me to discuss details.

This would be for footsteps / conversation noise.
If I could staple the MLV from the top, that'd be ideal

ok for conversation, with out a decoupler in the system your footfall would not be reduced.
