Computer Equipment Noise
« on: June 24, 2002, 04:19:23 PM »
I have several servers and other computer equipment mounted in a metal server cabinet. The side panels of the cabinet are solid, and the front and back panels are mesh. The hard drives and fans of the equipment emits some noise that travels to offices across from me. What can I do to minimize the noise but allow proper airflow and cooling at the same time?

You could line the server rack with some SSP foam mat. this is a closed cell foam material, that not only blocks sound, it also absorbs it. This material is impervious to water, oil, and other liquids, and  if applied correctly, should soundproof the rack well, and still allow for adequate ventilation. It is applied with ordinary contact cement. Keep in mind that the thicker the foam, the better the absorbtion. good luck!
