insta-foam vs

I know chaulking (flexible)is recommended and rigid substances such as insta foam should nver be used. however with pipe risers going from a basement to rooms above it seems that "great stuff"(foam) would fill all the open air voids so much better --- Is it still a no no

Bill,
It's your call on the insta foam. It will not do much, if anything for soundproofing,(it could actually contribute to sound transmission). Now it may help thermally and if that is your goal, then the insta foam may be your answer. Like it says on the site, the dead air space is a good soundproofer, keep that in mind Bill.

Bill,
The insta foam would transmit the sound to a certain degree, actually the dead air space if sealed properly would work better for you in your soundproofing effort.
