Sound absorbing or sound proofing?

Is there a difference between sound absorbing methods and sound proofing methods for a room?  Can the the same methods be used for either?  I want this room that we are building (a church sancuary) not to ring.

A: There is a difference.  SOundproofing entails placing something between the source of the sound and the receiver of it.  Acoustics means conditioning the room for proper balance between reflection and absorbsion. Sometimes soundproofing improves the acoustics but not vice-versa.  A book that goes into this more deeply is below.
