Title: Fiber Glass or Cellulose Insulation for studio
Post by: Zackeriah on August 08, 2005, 03:39:03 AM
Hello,
I am curious to know which is better to insulate my sound proof booth with Fiber Glass or Cellulose Insulation. http://www.naima.org/pages/resources/library/html/BI475.HTML site didn't seem to say that cellulose was a better sound eliminator, and I read on http://www.soundproofing101.com/sound_proofing_6.htm that Cellulose is the better one, but I am curious if they considered all types of fiber glass insulation because there are some that talk about sound proofing but do not give an STC rating.  Basically guys I am confused and if someone does know the better route and why please inform me.

Thank you and God Bless,
Zach

Both the Fibre Glass and Cellulose Insulation approaches are not the most effective in controlling sound in the walls of a sound booth. I suggest that you review  SSP Acoustical Mat; it comes in thicknesses ranging from 1/8" to 2" with or without an adhesvie backing. See URL:http://www.soundproofing.org/sales/prices.html

Thank you, I actually already plan to use the matting.  But why not go the extra step and try to use the best insulation too?  Also since you brought it up though, how big is one roll exactly?  Sorry, I just don't quite under stand how much I am getting for  $198 of 1/8 inch?  Also is 1/8 inch of matting more effective then a extra 5/8 of sheet rock?  I mean all these sound proofing websites always say the more mass the better, and wouldn't 5/8 of sheet rock weight more then a layer of 1/8 inch of matting?

God bless

I did not mean that you would use 1/8" mat.  Actually 1/2",3/4" or 1" mat is used with Cellulose or Fibre Glass Insulation materials. On the inside of 5/8" thick sheet rock.  Which has a STC value of about 8 points. Mass loaded Vinyl 1" per sq.ft. has an STC value of 26.  Look at: http://www.soundproofing.org/infopages/flooring.htm

Thanks for all your help skip.  I jut had one more question.  Why would you want the "Super Soundproofing Silencer (MLV) Mass Loaded Vinyl" with foam backing, vs no foam backing?

God Bless

Zach:

The MLV with Foam backing is used for soundproofing as a carpet underlay. MLV without foam backing is usualy used to soundproof walls and ceilings.
