Title: Garage & Super Soundproofing Foam Mat
Post by: iqbaliqbal on January 18, 2007, 07:53:18 PM
Hello- I'm trying to sound proof/reduce my garage and the Super Soundproofing Foam Mat seems to be the way to go for me. Currently, my garage already has been drywalled with 1/2 gypsum board, so my question is:

Could I install the foam mats and "wall them up" with WonderBoard or 1/8 plywood as opposed to another round of drywall?

Thanks!

Why Wonderboard or 1/8 plywood?

While wonderboard gives you a bit higher density (~100 lbs/4 X 8 sheet vs. 80 lbs for 5/8" drywall), it costs 20 bucks a sheet.  It's also porous and 'leaky' to sound.

1/8" plywood - might look great, but won't make any difference.  Also, I think it runs over 20 bucks a sheet.

5/8" type X drywall - dense enough, ten bucks a sheet, available nearly anywhere.  That's what I would recommend.

"Green Glue" would be better than plain wallboard, which has little low frequency sound blocking.
