Title: Sounds like MDF door ISN'T the best to use
Post by: Drumshed on August 17, 2011, 12:32:03 AM
Looks like my soundproofing project is almost complete.  The dimensions for my stand alone shed in the backyard are just under a 12'x12'x9'.   I've already installed the cotton fiber insulation, MLV, lead tape, ISO tape, 2x layers of drywall and the green glue.  I'm looking to replace the door as the door sounds hollow.

I've read multiple times on this forum that a MDF door is one of the better doors to get but when I went to Home Depot to get one, I was advised that a MDF door doesn't do well as an exterior door.  They said, "if it's exposed to the elements (water, sunlight, etc.) then you'll have to take the door down every 6 months and repaint it.  Otherwise, the door will swell up and be ruined."  He was telling me that the alternatives were solid wood, steel or fiberglass.

I leave it to you fellow super soundproofers.  Should I still get an MDF door or should I choose one of the alternatives mentioned?

-Dave
FYI: I currently have a steel door.

Solid wood door and you might have to add a layer of 1" ssp foam mat on the inside of the room.

make sure you have new weather seals and address any gap at the bottom with a door sweep.
