Title: soundproofing window by street
Post by: 95Michael on June 19, 2012, 05:10:34 PM
  Hello Everyone,

First off, I live in Scottsdale Arizona by a busy street and get headaches from the noise at times.  I was thinking about soundproofing the windows more.  Currently I have double pane windows and am thinking about installing another window, preferably one with a good stc rating, on the other end of the windows sill to maximize air space in between.  I think I can get about 3" in between.  These windows are expensive though and in order to test it out I was thinking about simply screwing on some material to the outer edge to simulate the windows.  I was wondering what the best material for this would be though.  Should I use mdf at a certain thickness?  I was looking at purchasing the owens corning rigid fiberglass 705 for this because if it worked very well, even better that the added window, I might just leave it up and hide it behind a curtain or something.  Thanks.

  Thanks Randy,

I think I am leaning towards the soundproofing plugs.  When I place the plug on the outside, probably will choose 3/4" MDF, would I get a lot more sound blockage if I where to place something in the cavity, might even get some of the low frequency.  I think I will get a good 3" to 4" cavity.  The room is also my study room, so I need it as peaceful as I can get it.  Thank you for the assistance.
