Title: Slight TV noise coming from shared wall.. what to do??
Post by: TVhater on September 21, 2009, 06:21:07 AM
I recently moved into a new apt to get away from the pacers that were living above me. I moved into the top floor to prevent the same problem, only to find that there is an annoying tv noise coming from one side of my apt. The peace offenders have the tv on all night and sometimes into the wee hrs of the morning (I think they leave it on and sleep).

I have done some research and came to the conclusion that their tv must be either touching or mounted to the wall. This conclusion was arrived at due to the fact that you cannot hear the noise in the hall or outside, and somewhat validated by the neighbors on the other side as they were playing music the other day that I could hear in the hall but not in my apt.

So I am now tasked with bringing peace back into my life. I know that almost all solutions (replies) in reducing wall noise entail a drywall green glue sandwich.. but this is allot more that i was wanting to do in a rented space that I will only be in for a year, but will if i have no other choice.

So now the Q and where I need your help. As the noise level medium, but is still anoying, and due to a tv touching/mounted to the wall, can I just drywall sandwich the area around where their tv is, or do i need to do the whole wall. I don't need 100% sound proofing, just that annoying tv mumbling to die down to the point i can read and sleep at night.

I thank you in advance for helping me on this! I will reply to posts if my mind has not abandoned me du to frustration.

Before you spend money on soundproofing, try a white-noise machine first.  You can get a good-quality one for about 50 bucks and they are very effective at blocking out noise just like you're talking about.  And it won't drown out your alarm clock, either.

We have tried that and it works most of the time, but i tire of the white noise pretty fast.

That's the white-noise you use?  That's nothing like a dedicated white-noise machine - it sounds like annoying static to me...

Here's what I have and I thoroughly recommend it:

A proper white-noise machine doesn't sound like static; it sounds more like a forced-air space heater.  And you don't 'tire' of it - your brain adapts until you don't even notice anymore.  I have a well soundproofed room but I still sleep with mine on, every night.

Give it a try...
