Title: Help me devise a plan?
Post by: lucymaybe on January 08, 2013, 06:26:33 PM
Hi all,

First off - thanks for any advice you might have to offer! So here is the situation. I live in an apartment with very noisy neighbors, whose kids play in the hallway adjoining my apt for hours at a time. There are 2 doors from the hallway into my apartment. One is functional, while the other is not. The door that doesn't actually open is not sealed over, just locked shut. I have purchased green glue caulk to seal up the edges between the door and the frame, but am wondering what else I should do to keep noise from entering my apartment from the hallway? The door itself is slightly recessed within the frame, so there is room to install, say, a sheet of homasote, over it to further decrease the sound leakage. Is that a good idea? Is there a better material, or combo therein, that you'd recommend? Both the door and doorway are made of wood, BTW.

Also, I was looking into installing an automatic door bottom on my front door (the functional door) as there is a crack beneath that noise seeps through. This front door is made of metal however, so I am wondering how I attach something to metal?

Any input appreciated!

Ok first off, green glue is not the correct product to use to seal off the door , acoustical caulk would be correct.
To improve the sound blocking of the door you can add a layer of mass loaded vinyl to the door.

to attach the door sweep you will need to use self tapping metal screws.

Thank you for the helpful advice Randy!

I was not clear before, it is the Green Glue brand sealant I purchased (http://www.greengluecompany.com/products/noiseproofing-sealant), which I believe works just like an acoustic caulk, at least according to their website!
