Title: Building a Band Room In my Back Yard
Post by: JeffM on March 30, 2014, 05:51:49 PM
I'm planning to build a  one room practice shed next to my house. This will be about 4 feet away from the house and will not be connected to any other structure. The dimensions will be 17 ft by 12 ft by 8 ft. The walls will by 2 x 4 construction. I'm considering using Green Glue Isolation clips with hat channel and Green Glue between 2 layers of 5/8 sheet rock on the walls and ceiling.

Is this the best option for sound isolation for this type of building?

Can anyone give me an idea of how well I can expect this room to isolate the sound of a drum set or electric guitars?

Any advice?

Thanks

There are far better designs, the best thing to do is give me a call direct and I will give you more options based on budget and performance.

I'm considering making this shed a room within a room with double walls, roof attached to the outer wall and ceiling attached to the inner wall.

I'm getting my information from the book: Home Recording Studio - Build it like the pros, by Rod Gervais.

The book's example of room within a room is built in a basement, so it's different than my situation especially the ceiling design.

1- For a room within a room structure, how much distance should I put between the 2 walls?

2- I'm thinking a 10' outside wall and a 9' inside wall. The roof would be attached to the outer wall and the ceiling to the inner wall. I can't find a similar example anywhere. Will this work?

3- The book says to use 1/2" sheetrock to put a fire break between the wall cavity and the attic area. Any idea how I would do this with the high and low walls?

4 - I'll need an breaker box, ceiling fan/light and a heater. Is there an easy way to sound isolate those?

5-  Is there somewhere I can get plans for a room within a room that is a single building?

I'm also wondering if I might just as well off with just one wall that's been sealed with noiseproofing sealant and double drywall with green glue. I've had a couple of people tell me that the double wall is overdoing it.

Thanks

Jeff

Ok, There are many ways to do soundproofing it all comes down to the value of reduction needed..

here are the answers to your questions.

1) as long as the frames do not make contact the system will work, I usually only do 1" however the bigger spacing is helpful its just a loss of room size..

2) I have an example of room in a room design I will e-mail to you.

3) build the outer frame system before building the inner frame.
4) Yes those will be mounted to the inner frame and a combination of putty pads and MLV will for sound control.
5) I have a massive file on a stand alone room that we can send in a zip file.

No such thing as overkill in soundproofing it is only diminishing point of return.

Hi Randy,

I am about to embark on a similar project and was wondering if you might be able to email me the plans as well.  We are meeting with the contractor on Saturday to submit plans to the city and these would be super useful to explain to the contractor what we need to do.  I'm in Los Angeles and I anticipate being in touch quite a bit for materials.  Thank you!

Hi Randy,

Am new to the site.  I'm in Australia, looking for advice with the room within a room design.

The shed in the backyard has just been built and concrete is done.  The shed is still just a shell, with no lining.
I'm wanting to build a studio for band practice and recording.  The area I have to work with is about 12' x 15'.  Ceiling height around 9.5'.

Are you able to add me to your Dropbox so I could look at the room within a room design?

Thanks in advance!
