Title: Cheaper Alternative Materials for Soundproofing
Post by: Bobbynoway on October 02, 2015, 12:28:17 AM
Hi,
Ive been a lurker for some time. Im about to embark on improving the sound isolation for my home theatre room.
As always, money is an issue and Im investigating if there are cheaper alternatives or methods to significantly improve the noise isolation.
I can acquire cheaply 6mm acoustic underlay (170kg/m3 dense) that I was thinking to use as a layer onto the existing wall and ceiling. And then add normal 13mm plasterboard or fiber cement sheets. This is not a typical install method, but will it work well?
Fiber cement sheets are denser than plasterboard, and comparatively cheaper and thinner, have anyone else tried this?

Or should I just stick to the standard method of adding green glue + 2 layers of plasterboard?

I use the cement board / green glue / sheet rock method quite often to increase the mass value of our wall systems..so this is good.

If you are building a decoupled system you want to load as much mass on each frame as you can...
