Author Topic: Small pump noise  (Read 2932 times)

Hello,

I need some advice on a DIY enclosure project and any supplies I might need.

I have recently purchased a hot water recirculation pump that fits under the sink in our bathroom (Chilipepper Appliance).  When activated, it sounds like a loud drink blender crushing ice.  It looks like a rectagular plastic box about 4" x 4" x 8" in dimensions with a water hookup on each side and a power cord on one end.  It simply sits on the bottom of the sink cabinet (on rubber feet).

I was thinking about building a small enclosure out of 3/4" MDF lined with some type of sound absorbing material.  I'm not sure if I should make the box double thick (1.5") or if 3/4" is enough.  I don't know if MDF is the best material to use, but it seems good speaker cabinets use it so I thought that would be the right choice.  I'm also not sure if I cut slots in the box for the water and power connections that it will let the noise out and if there is a way to "seal" around those connections.  I'm also not sure if I can build the box with tight dimensions or if I have to have a lot of airspace around the pump to be effective.  The manufacturer claims that the device can be tightly enclosed without regards to air circulation or heat buildup.

Any advice on how to build this box and what sound absorbing material I need would be appreciated.
