soundproofing a portable air conditioner

I have this product right here

and it gets quite loud. It has vents all along the backside and on the sides. I was thinking of getting some sound absorbing material and covering the bottom vents and side vents since covering those vents doesnt seem to block the airflow and alot of the compressor's noise comes from there. Will covering it using some material reduce the noise coming from it? If so, which ones should I get and how much should I get?

the unit measure aprox 1.5 feet by 1 feet

Yes, a Closed Cell Vinyl Foam will help absorb sound that you have described. You will have to watch out for covering up any vents that would restrict the machines operations. Thickness of 3/4" or 1" foam would be appropriate in this case.

Take a look at:/http://www.soundproofing.org/sales/prices.html.
