Reducing noise AC closet
« on: May 24, 2017, 12:25:12 AM »
I have an AC closet that is just a few feet from our sitting area and when it turns on it is very loud. I can definitely hear the sound of air rushing in and out of the unit along with the unit operating itself. The air handler is mounted vertically in the closet on a stand 12" off the ground with 10' ceilings. The return air is coming in from the bottom and the cold air is ducted through the ceiling.

I would like dampen the sound of the air rushing both in and out of the unit and do whatever sound absorption to quiet it down in the areas when the door to the closet is shut. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated! I was debating trying to build a box of sorts for the return to quiet it down but i'm not sure there is room or the best solution.

You can use our SSP foam mat 1/2" and line the duct inside to help reduce noise.

I see that the door has louvers and that is going to be a problem with quieting the unit down.

I would start by lining the duct and assess the first value of reduction. Most likely you will have to change the door and vent the room a different way if you want to achieve full overall reduction.
